The Basics of Photography : Getting Started with Manual Controls

Years ago, I took a shot at learning how to take photos with a big camera with manual controls and it was a big mess of "try everything and hope something works". ... and I was shooting on film.  Things have changed quite a bit since then and now with digital you realistically could use that approach because there is literally no additional cost involved in shooting 50 versions of the same photo. But that's not very rewarding and I wish that someone had given me a couple basic lessons to get me started.

Love burns eternal in Yosemite

It was raging just miles from Yosemite National Park. The Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County blanketed the sky in gradients of ash and white smoke. Many postponed their trips to the park in response to the blaze, but we pushed straight forward into the haze to capture the wedding of a lifetime.

16-35mm f2.8 vs 12-24mm f4

On May 17th, Sony announced two new wide-angle lenses, the 16-35mm f2.8 and the ultra wide 12-24mm f4. The 16-35mm f2.8 completes the "holy trinity" joining the 24-70 f2.8 GM and the 70-200 f2.8 GM. A few of us Sony Alpha Collective members tried to decide which lens was better in regards to the look and feel, the overall size and also the image quality. We tested both of these lenses on the new Sony A9 and the Sony A7RII, so take a look and decide for yourself.

Click farm exposed

Recently Instagram shut down automation websites like Instagress and Mass Planner but footage appeared this week from what is being called "Click Farms".  You can see by the pictures there are phones lined up on shelfs in many rooms. According to a Russian reporter, he estimated there were about 10,000 phones. The idea of these click farms is to write positive product reviews and to like pictures on Instagram. Based on Instagram's algorithm, the more engagement within a certain time period will make the post go viral or on top of the hashtags being used.
